Liverpool Public Realm Strategy to improve the city centre

Liverpool City Council has appointed a team of urban designers, landscape architects, and planners to develop a Public Realm Strategy to make changes to the city over the next 50 years.

The aim of the strategy is to deliver a better-connected city centre that will contribute to sustainable development principles and will also reinforce the city centre as a location for businesses, homes, culture and tourism.

The public realm strategy will go to public consultation next year in order to provide a planning framework to ensure a co-ordinated approach to the design and management of the city.

The strategy proposes £14bn worth of development schemes to the city over the upcoming decade.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: ‘Liverpool is undergoing an unprecedented renaissance with billions of pounds reshaping the city’s economy, but we need an overarching vision to flue all this regeneration activity together.’

‘How a city looks and feels at a human level is vital to its success. We now have a number of masterplans all looking to foster growth across the city centre but the quality of our public spaces and streets needs to be consistent and complementary.’

‘We take great pride in the fact that the city wins awards for its world-class welcome, but that experience needs to continue right through to the benches people sit on, the directional signs they read right through to the planting and lighting in our squares and streets.’

‘I look forward to seeing the development of this public realm strategy and would encourage all our residents and businesses to give their input to shape its direction and help further fuel to the Liverpool Powerhouse.’

In related news, Kier Property and CTP have secured planning for a new Grade A office development in the centre of Liverpool’s commercial business district (CBD).

Kier and CTP were selected as Liverpool council’s development partners in 2017 as part of the £200m Pall Mall regeneration scheme aimed at extending Liverpool’s CBD and helping to grow the Liverpool city region economy.
