‘It’s a Knockout’ time for Liverpool’s voluntary sector

With rising unemployment and less disposable income to go around, we are all aware that charities across the UK are struggling to stay afloat amid the recession. At a time when its services are increasingly required, there is less funding available to the voluntary sector.

Charities obviously rely on their supporters and Liverpool’s leading charity organisation has hit on an interesting solution to survive these difficult times.

Liverpool Charity and Voluntary Services (LCVS) has organised a fundraising ‘It’s a knockout’ competition, with companies across the city signing up to raise money for their favourite charity.

Teams from local businesses, such as Paul Rooney Solicitors, Kenyon Fraser Marketing Communications and Ology Business Coaching, will be kitting themselves out in a variety of crazy costumes to participate in various bizarre tasks similar to those in the TV show ‘It’s a Knockout’.

A host of lawyers, PR executives and other professionals will come together to battle their way through a series of events.

The competition has received a lot of interest from the people of Liverpool and should raise a substantial amount for a number of beneficiaries, including Claire House Hospice and the Marina Dalglish Appeal.

It takes place at Mossley Hill Athletics Club, in the south of the city, on Sunday 28th June and people are welcome to attend to cheer the competitors on. There will be a number of other attractions to keep the crowd occupied and local charities will be bringing stalls and information on how people can get involved.

LCVS should be congratulated for leading the way and organising such an entertaining, inclusive event. The response from the city’s population shows that, even with all the doom and gloom attached to the current economic climate, people will always look for ways to support a good cause. The level of interest shown from the different businesses indicates that there is still a strong philanthropic spirit in Liverpool.

Perhaps other areas of the UK will follow suit and look for new and exciting ways to support the voluntary sector.
