Cornwall to host ‘alternative G7 conference’ this June

An ‘alternative G7 conference’, which aims to examine the role of the voluntary sector to improve and strengthen civil society, is taking place in Cornwall next month.

The Co-creating Cornwall’s Future conference on 11 June is being billed as an alternative to the summit of world leaders, which is also taking place in the county this summer.

The alternative event has been organised to harness the intrinsic motivation of Cornwall’s citizens and the voluntary sector to improve and strengthen civil society.

Opening the day’s events will be a video message from HRH The Duchess of Cornwall whose commitment to the voluntary sector is evidenced by her patronage of several Cornish charities.

In an excerpt, the Duchess extends her thanks to each and everyone in the voluntary sector for ‘doing a proper job’.

The voluntary sector in Cornwall is a major employer, with above 414,543 volunteers working in registered charities.

This means almost three out of four adults offers time, altruism and commitment to a fairer society.

This may include out of county volunteers attending events such as festivals.

Pro Bono wellbeing indices show that people living in areas with more Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector organisations score higher wellbeing than areas with economic factors.

‘We want to amplify the voices of our voluntary sector and residents and showcase their great ideas on how we can improve society, especially at this time when the world is looking at Cornwall,’ said chief executive of Cornwall Voluntary Sector Forum.

‘The Duchess’ message of encouragement for the voluntary sector will highlight the importance each and every person contributes to making Cornwall everything it is.’
