Congleton Market regeneration aims to ‘redefine’ the town centre

In an attempt to boost the Cheshire-based towns local economy, investors have begun transforming a derelict area into a hub of independent food vendors.

Located on Princess Street, the new Congleton Market Quarter will become home to 10 independent food stalls and will run a weekly Saturday craft market to bolster an existing covered market of 60 stalls when it opens towards the end of this year.

Last week town locals were invited to see the new space at a pre-launch party which was held between 17:00-22:00 and was accompanied with live music.

According to experts behind the plans, the development will ‘breathe new life into Congleton reviving one of its oldest retail areas and giving the town a meeting place to call its own’.

A range of abandoned buildings have been renovated, with bar and restaurant owners getting ready to welcome customers.

One bar that is set to appear at the new site is R&Gs Tap House. Owned by Greg and Rosie Start, the pair have claimed they were attracted to the town when they decided to expand their business from an existing beet shop and online retailer in Macclesfield.

Speaking to the BBC, Greg said: ‘It’s the idea that we can help redevelop and add value to the centre of a town which is growing in physical size…also in its demand for new and different things.’

The site was acquired by Scarborough Developments from Modus when the firm went into administration in 2010. The new developer of the site is Nick Hynes Real Estate, who in the 1990s refurbished the old mills at Meadowside on Mountbatten Way.

Founder Nick Hynes has claimed the new project would ‘redefine Congleton town centre and add value to the entire town.’
